Artificial Intelligence and Marketing
May 1, 2019
When you hear artificial intelligence marketing, you may think that is something for large companies with big budgets or some kind of term used in the movies, but it’s really something every business owner can utilize. Think about your daily life, we benefit from artificial intelligence every day—Amazon and Netflix use artificial intelligence to recommend products or television shows based on what we search or watch.
To better understand artificial intelligence marketing let’s look at the definition of AI marketing:
“…a method of leveraging customer data and AI concepts like machine learning to anticipate your customer’s next move and improve the customer journey” (Emarsys).
If you really dig deep into that definition, particularly the portion that talks about anticipating your customer’s next move and improving the customer journey isn’t that what we as business owners have wanted to do all along. In some form or fashion, businesses have been doing this since the beginning of time, it was just a little harder to obtain. I can remember shopping with my mom when I was a kid in one of her favorite clothing boutiques. It was a couple of months before Christmas and the business had a notebook at the front desk for women to write down their clothing selections with sizing in the book to make Christmas shopping easy for their husbands. This was a form of artificial intelligence at that time, because the retailer was collecting data about each customer’s tastes and likes.
I read that marketers must create upwards of 14,000 content pieces per year. This content is also “tailored specifically to the platform responsible for distributing it as well as the associated target audience” (Cortex). We agree AI marketing can get quite expensive, so how can a small business cash in on such a great tool? TSheets by QuickBooks recently published an article addressing that very question. I’ll pick a few high points from the article; read it in its entirety here.
